This is Venus portrayed after her liaison with Mars, the god of war. She is carved from limewood with some copper and silver mounted on a 12 inch / 30 cm diameter marble sphere.
This is not a terribly difficult carving but having carved several very similar figures I have worked out a method of doing it. It requires a very systematic approach, completing certain stages in order before attempting the next stages. It is quite difficult to access certain areas and requires some ingenuity in the use of holding devices.
This is not a ‘Teach you to carve book’ – I will not be telling you which tool to use or how to sand, although occasionally I do.
The figure laid over a ball is very striking and much in demand by my clients. I hope you will enjoy the challenge – I think you will find it worth it.
