Punchinello, Pulchinello or Punch derives

from a character in the Italian

‘Commedia dell ‘Arte, a kind of feckless

idiot, immortalised by the artist

Giambatista Tiepolo and his son Domenico.

The Commedia was suppressed in the

18th Century but survived in

various ways, Punchinello resurfacing as

Mr Punch in the Punch and Judy shows.
